Growing-Up Years

We transferred to Rome, Georgia, when I was eleven and attended a good gospel church pastored by Pastor H. E. Wright. His son, Melton "Cobb" Wright was a good friend to me. In 1960, he wrote a book about the history of Bob Jones University, The Fortress of Faith, and dedicated it to his father.

During this time, I also had a paper route and won many contests, [receiving] several bicycles. I attended Rome High School. At age fourteen, I publicly dedicated my life to the Lord to serve Him in any way that He wanted me to serve. Along with others, we began holding Sunday afternoon Bible classes around the city, mainly among the black children.
